If you own a dog and are on this blog right now, then you likely have a deep understanding of the friendship that we have with our pets. In fact, it even feels weird to call ourselves “owners” when we are the ones who owe so much to these creatures who love us unconditionally.
I have been working for almost two years now on a film called Wolf Dog, inspired by a the true story of friendship between me and my dog, Paco Sosa – formerly known as New York’s oldest dog. Paco and I were together for over 20 years. The story is based on something extraordinary that happened the last few weeks that Paco and I shared–something that showed me just how far our pets will go to care for us.
Prior to Paco’s 20th birthday, he suffered a seizure that, against all odds, he survived. The night Paco came home from the hospital, I had a dream that led me to believe that Paco was not ready to let go, and that I had to take him from New York back to our homeland of New Mexico to seek the help of the ancient ones—New Mexico’s Native American and indigenous Spanish people practicing the old ways.
Listening to this dream was the craziest thing I ever did, but after 20 years together, Paco was my family. And if there was any chance that the ancient ones could help him, then I was going to do something crazy.
So Paco and I traveled to New Mexico and found the ancient ones…and much more. By the end of our journey I understood the real meaning of my dream, and just how far Paco would go to take care of me.
Wolf Dog’s core message is one of respecting animal life. The story also shows how much animals have to teach us. When finished, along with working towards a wide distribution, the film will be used to help raise awareness and funds for various animal causes.
I’m only a few weeks away from completing the film, but to get there, I need to raise funds to pay for the final music and animation costs. I know there are many of you out there who have experienced the love I shared with Paco–the love we all share with our dogs, and I hope you can help me bring this film to life. We have wonderful gifts for our donors, including a credit in the film!
